Lead Medical Supply Technicians (Detail or Temporary Promotion)

DUTIES:Back to top The Lead role is a non-supervisory position that is responsible for ensuring management tasks, goals and objectives are accomplished on time. Duties include: Distribute and balance workload and tasks among team members in accordance with established work flow or job specialization, assuring timely accomplishment of the assigned tasks, and assuring that each employee has a role in developing the final product. Keep in touch with the status and progress of work, and make adjustments in accordance with established priorities by recommending tour of duty changes, overtime, compensatory time and/or obtaining other types of assistance from the supervisor on major problems that may arise. Mantain job knowledge proficiency in order respond to questions from team members on procedures, policies, directives, etc. Prepare reports as required. Assist in preparing budget reports. Resolve simple, informal complaints. Provide information to supervisor relative to individual and term performance standards, rating, promotions, awards and personnel needs. Train team members. Complete purchase card training and act as a back-up for ordering medical supplies. Fill in for SPD staff when necessary where workload dictates such a need. Provide holiday and weekend coverage with other team members in accordance with policy. WORK SCHEDULE #1:  Day shift, 7:00 am - 3:30 pmWORK SCHEDULE #2:  Evening shift, 2:30 am - 11:30pm QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:Back to top MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:   You must meet the qualifications/minimum requirements of this position by the closing date of this vacancy announcement.  Time-in-Grade Restriction:  Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. The grade may have been in any occupation but must have been held in the Federal service.   Physical Effort and Working Conditions: Work is performed in a temperature controlled environment.  It can be very hot. Employee must be able to observe safety precautions while working on wet floors, around a variety of cleaning agents, chemicals and around the steam, plasma and gas equipment. Employee is in contact with many types of hospital diseases and is required to wear protective clothing and use universal precautions.  The employee may potentially be exposed to Ethylene Oxide a minimum of 30 days per year. Physical Standards:  Passing a pre-employment physical examination is required.  Please contact the local human resources office at: 402-995-4947 if you need information regarding the VA policy on physicals and if you want information on physical requirements of the position.  In order to qualify for this position, you must meet one of the following qualification requirements: Specialized Experience:  You must possess at least one full year of specialized experience, equivalent to the Federal GS-6 level, that has equipped you with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of this position.   Examples of specialized experience include:  Experience in processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing and issuing sterile and unsterile medical supplies and equipment.  The applicant must possess: Knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operating conditions of medical supply items; knowledge of decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures; knowledge of aseptic techniques; and skill in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners and gas and steam sterilizers.  Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work as an Operating Room Technician, medical instrument technician, Nursing Assistant, Corpsman or Laboratory Worker; or  Education: Possess one full year of graduate education.  One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study.  If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement.  It is important to understand that this education must include courses directly related to the work of the medical supply technician position such as medical supply processing, storage and distribution, sterile supplies, operating room, surgical technician courses; or other fields related to this position.  Transcripts are required; or   Combination of Education and Experience: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience are also qualifying.  This education must include courses directly related to the work of the position, as described above.  When education is credited, the number of hours of related course required will be prorated as a proportion of the total education used.  Transcripts are required. Education Note:  Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in order for it to be credited towards qualifications (particularly positions with a positive education requirement.)  Therefore, applicants must report only attendance and/or degrees from schools accredited by accrediting institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.  All education claimed by applicants will be verified by the appointing agency accordingly.  Applicants can verify accreditation at the following website:  http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/Search.aspx   Foreign Education Note: If you are using foreign education to meet qualification requirements, you must send a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency with your transcript in order to receive credit for that education.   Specialized Experience Note: In order to receive credit for your specialized experience, you must be clear and specific and fully describe your responsibilities. A full year of work is considered to be 35 -  40 hours of work per week.  Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.  Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position, salary/grade level and the number of hours a week spend in such employment.  We will not make assumptions regarding your experience when evaluating you for this position.  If after reviewing your resume and/or supporting documentation, a determination is made that you have inflated your qualifications and/or experience OR that your documentation does not support the questionnaire responses, you may be rated ineligible/not qualified.  You may provide narrative responses to the KSAOs below if desired. You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:  
  • Knowledge of aseptic principles & techniques, including sterile processing.
  • Ability to operate sterilization equipment. 
  • Ability to assemble, wrap and store reusable medical equipment.
  • Knowledge of Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) International Association of Health care Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM) & Quality Control Standards. 
  • Ability to communicate with people from various backgrounds both orally and in writing.
