Safety and Occupational Health Specialist at Omaha

JOB SUMMARY:

Civilian employees serve a vital role in supporting the Army mission. They provide the skills that are not readily available in the military, but crucial to support military operations. The Army integrates the talents and skills of its military and civilian members to form a Total Army.

About the Position:
Serves as a Safety & Occupational Health Specialist for the Omaha District.  The position is located in downtown Omaha, NE.  Omaha has a wide array of parks, museums, historical sites, restaurants, recreation, and entertainment venues that are just minutes away.

Incumbent will assist in planning comprehensive safety and occupational health program; apply/interpret regulations/standards, inspect worksites, develop/review/analyze statistical data of accidents and injuries.  Provide technical advice, prepare written procedures for implementation of accident prevention programs.  Develop and present technical safety training to supervisors and employees.  Uses a wide variety of materials, publications, exhibits, protective devices, and visual aids; promote safety campaigns through oral presentations at local and field safety committee meetings, posting safety displays, and publishing mishap prevention articles.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below.  Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Experience required: To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job.  Specialized experience is defined as:

1) Experience in construction safety, inspections, and hazard identification. 2) Experience executing safety and occupational health programs.  This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

 

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:

  • Inspections & Tests

 

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade (or equivalent).


Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you may qualify if your education meets the definitions below:

 

  • Must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; OR
  • 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree; OR
  • A combination of Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements for the grade levels specified in the table, and may be computed by first determining the applicants total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determining the applicants education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; and then adding the two percentages. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level. Only graduate education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be used to qualify applicants for positions at grades GS-9 and GS-11. (When crediting education that requires specific course work, prorate the number of hours of related courses required as a proportion of the total education to be used.)
